NIKON SPONSORS 19th ANNUAL BARNSTORM: THE EDDIE ADAMS WORKSHOP

MELVILLE, N.Y. —

From Friday, October 6th to Monday, October 9th, Nikon will provide 100 hand-picked student photographers with the opportunity to trade tips, techniques and ideas with seasoned photography professionals. This four-day event, Barnstorm: The Eddie Adams Workshop, has been engaging the youth community through photography since 1988.

"By supporting this workshop, we have the opportunity to educate and enrich the lives of future photojournalists," said Anna Marie Bakker, director of Communications, Nikon Inc. "This workshop is the perfect way to commemorate the life of Eddie Adams and the contributions that he made to the field of photojournalism."

This exclusive workshop will provide a forum for photojournalists to interact with the budding professionals of their field through hands-on activities and panel discussions. The faculty represents organizations such as Time, National Geographic, Parade, The New York Times, People, Sports Illustrated, Reuters, Miami Herald, Houston Chronicle, The Washington Post and others. Since its creation, the event has drawn the participation of many great photographers including Eddie Adams, Harry Benson, Eric Draper, Bill Eppridge, Tom Franklin, Walter Iooss, David Kennerly, Douglas Kirkland, Heinz Kluetmeier, Mary Ellen Mark, Joe McNally, Carl Mydans, Gordon Parks, Joe Rosenthal and Nick Ut.

During the workshop, the student participants are divided into ten teams. All teams are paired with a photographer, an editor and a researcher, all working pros within the field of photojournalism. Each day consists of hands-on activities such as shooting and editing, as well as speeches and panel discussions. Over the four days, the students are exposed to many types of photography including photojournalism, fine art photography, studio portraiture, underwater work, long-term projects, and conflict photography. The highlight of the workshop is the "11:30 Club" during which students participate in one-on-one meetings with editors to discuss and evaluate their portfolios.

Last year, 2005, was the first year The Eddie Adams Workshop had an official Multimedia team, where 10 of the students had the opportunity to go into the field and record audio along with their still images. Due to the success of that trial, and interest from the team faculty, this year, the multimedia aspect of the workshop is greatly expanding, offering each of the ten teams the opportunity to work with a Multimedia Producer. Brian Storm of MediaStorm is heading the Multimedia Team, assisted by Tom Kennedy of the Washington Post and Newsweek Interactive and Rich Beckman from The University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. The 10 Multimedia producers come from a variety of the leading multimedia production publications/centers in the country, including MSNBC, washingtonpost.com, Detroit Free Press, and MediaStorm.

Since the workshop's inception in 1988, Nikon has assumed a large role in sponsoring the event by providing technical support and equipment and sending professionals to teach and lecture. Each year, several Nikon executives offer their expertise in panel discussions and members of Nikon's Professional Services are on hand to provide technical support.

In addition to the event sponsorship, this is the third year that Nikon will award a $10,000 scholarship to the top student from the Barnstorm Workshop. The student will be selected by a panel of judges based on the work that he or she presents during the workshop. The scholarship money must be used by the winning student to further their education in the photographic arts field, and will be applied towards their tuition and/or housing at the college of attendance.

"Next year, The Eddie Adams Workshop turns 20 years old (or 20 years young as Eddie Adams would have said). Nikon has been an integral part of the Workshop, supporting the vision of Eddie Adams and the spirit of photojournalism since the inception of the first Workshop in 1988," said Alyssa Adams, Deputy Photo Editor, TV Guide."Together, over 19 years, we have experienced the first digital revolution in the photo industry and through our shared collaboration are ready to embrace the next."
